April 25, 2021So I left the job and didn't take pictures, but I can explain it and am hoping to confirm my suspicions just for re assurance purposes. The tub required a 50 amp service according to the manual. I pulled #6awg from the main panel to the spa pack outside. I then ran PVC from the spa pack to the tub and terminated the wires accordingly. I know people will ask, so I supplied the spa pack with a 50amp standard breaker. Terminated the supply on the line side lugs in the spa pack, then connected the tub wiring to all 3 spots on the gfi breaker, with the built in neutral going to the neural bar. I energized the circuit and the home owner turned on the tub. All was well, so I cleaned up and left. About an 1. 5 hours later, I got a call from the homeowner, and the gfi tripped and won't reset. I went back to troubleshoot it. Sure enough the gfi breaker didn't reset, but the line side still had 120v phase to ground and 240v phase to phase. I started my troubleshooting with checking for continuity on the tub wiring and there was none.

Hi Reddit! Hoping someone can provide some advice regarding a recent spa GFCI breaker issue I'm having. Details: Had a storm roll through while I was away today, house lost power. I've never had breaker issues due to power loss before but this one must have been bad, as one of the GFCI outlets in my basement tripped leading to no hot water until I figured that one out. I assume spa GFCI happened today, but haven't soaked or maintenance in 2-3 days, so totally possible its been dead for a day or two. 50 Amp Breaker Diagnosis Steps: Opened the GFCI up to find it in the middle position. Opened tub panel, turned off the heater/jet/blower/ozone power. Attempted to reset GFCI by moving the bar to OFF and then back to ON. Result = Still broken (flips to middle before going back to OFF) Attempted to use the TEST Button when GFCI position was ON. Result = Nothing happens. Bad homeowner admittal- I honestly can't recall if this ever worked. I assume it did, but it's been 2 years since I had any GFCI issues with the tub and I self diagnosed and fixed that one (basically by deciding the Blower was dying and I didn't care about the blower- so it got taken off the box and all has been well for 2 years =).

I am considering mounting some plywood over the back side, spanning the adjacent wall studs, and mounting the GFCI panel to that. I would then run a short length of conduit () between the two panels. I am not aware of any restrictions about this configuration. Is there something I'm not thinking of, perhaps regarding connecting two panels back-to-back, or other space considerations? I have a small 100-amp panel, mostly filled entirely with tandem breakers, so I understand that cramming more breakers and large-gauge wire in there is not exactly ideal, but I also do not believe that it is strictly against code, and I do not seem to be violating the manufacturer's specs for the panel. Any thoughts, ideas, warnings, alternate suggestions? Thank you! EDIT: I added some pictures of the panel and diagram. Also, I am aware of several issues with the panel as is, which were unfortunately introduced by the last person I paid to work in there. I will be fixing the following at the same time I add the new breaker: Wrong manufacturer breaker in the bottom slot.
